Are Arsenal fans content with potential?

As I sit here with my cup of coffee I think, what original Arsenal 'news' is there to write about?

My opinion on the game last week? What side will we pick for tomorrow's game? What does the long term future hold for Arsenal? All good potential points which I may write about tomorrow and all worthy of a story, then I think of all the other blogs out there and feel the need for something different.

I start to think that potential soon becomes success but also can become an excuse for failure.

Potential is the best thing in the world and also the worst thing as well. Can you imagine if Fabregas doesn't become the best player in the world? Or Walcott doesn't become an England regular?

Potential allows us to dream that in 2 seasons time we will be the best and there's no reason why that can't be the case, but does that means we have to win a trophy this season to be successful? How long can you have a potential Championship winning side before it turns into a dream?

Do we as fans allow ourselves to take the easy option and believe that next season we will win the Championship or Champions League rather than realise we are not quite good enough?

Or do we have possibly the best young squad ever assembled and we are on the brink of success like that enjoyed by Ajax of the early 90's?

I am one of the latter and one of those people who's mood is often mirrored by Arsenal's results. I live on a game to game basis and if we lose I always have the cushion that in a year or two I believe we will be right up there again and that the future of the club is better than ever.

But is that potential enough? Would the Carling Cup be enough? Or is it another year to hold on to the potential?

Do we have to win major trophies to keep our fans happy? Or will potential suffice?

don't get me wrong, potential is great. but how much potential can we possibly have? we need experienced players now, especially in goal as lehmann is no longer consistent enough.

Potential is one thing, success another, but what really keeps me happy is supporting a team that plays great exciting football and being overjoyed at the prospect of watching the team evolve through the ages.

It might not happen the way we want it to but so long as theres a chance I wouldnt sacrifice it to support a boring team that win things and evolve by buying and not growing.

Surely the big Arsenal plan is that there is no point developing all this potential if you have to sell it, as Ajax had to.

If you invest in the future, and have the financial capacity (with a new stadium, corporate income, sponsorship and so forth), then you have the potential to not only develop a truly great team, but also to create a football machine which has the history and culture required to continue to attract and develop the greatest young players in the world. That to me is Wenger's genius.

When was the World Cup? A couple of months back I recall... Lehmann was the best goalkeeper in the whole tournament! Plus he was named to the Champions League squad as well.

He may not be young, but he's certainly good enough "right now."

In my honest opinion, we've already shown that IF we play our best, we are one of the best teams in the world, and the best in England. Our potential is becoming something more than just potential. I used to be worried as well, that we had potential that would never be fullfilled, but no longer. This team IS already the best there is, when performing like they can. This year, we've beaten ManUtd away and home, Liverpool thrice (away and home), Tottenham, drawn with Chelsea (when we had an understrength side) and we are still in all the cups. We've shown everything that is needed from a number one team but consistency, which we are showing a bit of now. I've never looked brighter on how things are, let alone the future!

Arsene knows.

Good piece. Arsenal always speak of potential as if other Clubs are standing still.
However, just as we trumpet Fabregas and Walcott...Chelsea has Mikel and Kalou and United will no doubt buy as is appropriate.

In my mind, if Arsenal wins nothing this season then we are in trouble. Henry, in my estimation has one brilliant and one good season left; then what?
