Why a shrewd summer signing can make us great again

Arsenal drew 0-0 with Pompey.. Match reports here, here and here.

Basically this game was our entire season compressed into 90 agonisingly wasteful minutes.

Julio Baptista was the main culprit and missed a penalty as well as a couple of free headers which you can't do if you want to compete for the title. Baptista has well and truly blown it and despite showing some improvement in recent weeks and a good attitude he is on his way back to Madrid.

I can't see Reyes coming back although he was pretty immense for Madrid the other night, but he is as Arseblogger says, a fairweather footballer for sure.

New faces is excatly what's needed and with Henry and Van Persie coming back and Bendtner and Walcott looking to fulfill their obvious potential we have all the firepower needed to convert our chances into goals.

We do however need more width and a genuinely classy wide player to offer more balance to the side when we play 4-4-2. That player could be Ribery or Babel or even Malouda but I don't think we will be bringing in more than one major signing. We might also sign an experienced squad player and a couple of 16 or 17 year old 'starlets'.

The sales of Ljungberg, Aliadiere, Flamini, Reyes and Almunia will raise £12 - £15m along with whatever the board deem fit in terms of a budget, which can be used for new faces.

Now is the time for the silly season and let's clear a few rumours up here and now;

Henry is staying.
Gilberto is staying.
Eto'o is not coming.
Huntelaar is not coming.

We will sign someone you have never heard of.

Overall the squad is not far off where we need it to be, we need a bit more balance and to start scoring first more but we are on the verge of getting it right. The return of key players and a shrewd summer signing can invigorate a squad which has all the potnential to make us a great side again.

a report that appears to be a pastiche of newspaper articles with nothing new to add

lots of unsubstantiated statements. At least the silly season makes up rumours that get us excited, you have made up a whole load of miserable stuff.
I think a big name signing is certainly a possiblity, and Ribery would qualify as that. There are a lot of top class strikers on the move, so don't be surprised if Arsenal aren't tempted. Eto'o is just Arsene Wenger's type of player, strong, quick, technical, but whether they get him or not is another matter.

Interesting and thoughtful analysis - as always.

what a beautiful site seeing laporta after the betis equaliser. what an arse.

in my opinion, what we need most is a player who runs at the opposition, upsets defensive lines and creates space for everyone else. only henry can do it for us, since hleb started to be petrified of the ball. yes ribery. WE WANT FRANCKENSTEIN. how realistic is it though? if reyes goes home to sevilla, he'll be real's no1 target. we need to sort this ASAP.

also i think it would be a complete outrage if we don't try and sign richards after his 'come get me' remarks. an england international gooner. he supposedly can cover in midfield as well!

ooh and a bit of gossip. my girlfriend works at momos where arsenal had a party. they had one bottle of champagne among 15!
only player to drink and smoke - phil gallas. and guess who footed the bill. good old jens. magic

if your were a true arsenal fan,
you would know that our transfers just happen,
no one but Arsene and his people know who we are going to sign,
so instead of slagging off our team and baptista in particular,
get behind the team.
fairwheather fans like you we dont need..
and before you no doubt come out with "i pay my money etc etc"
true fans dont hide behind a computer slagging of there team.

Wenger showed us a taste of things to come adopting the 4 3 3 formation.

Eboue and Djourou in midfield played well.

There is a lot of strength in depth in this squad more than a lot that you may realise.

Especially the doom merchants amongst a lot of the supporters!

I would hardly say that saying 'we are not far from where we need to be' and that 'a shrewd summer signing can make us a great side again' is slagging off the team.

I agree that we need a wide player and that Wenger could do with a big name to excite the squad and help them believe but he doesn't buy big names that often.

I think everyone gets a bit carried away by all of the stories in the sun and forgets that we rarey ever buy ready made world class players.

I learnt a lot from watching the game last night and I mean more than the obvious shortcomings on show that so very aptly summarised our season. I thought that Hoyte had a great game at right back and had a good goal unfairly disallowed too. Eboue was brilliant at right midfield making me wonder why we put Hleb there in the first place. Hleb was his usual incompetent self on the left wing but I thought that Fabregas had a brilliant game. Some of his passes and intricate interplay especially with Diaby was truly inspired stuff. Senderos was his usual dithering self and was lucky not to cost us more than that one goal that was unjustly disallowed for them. Djourou had a great game and Diaby is looking better and better each game. I thought Poom had an excellent game too for one that has had precious few first team performances or even reserve team performances for that matter. I still think he is the best goalkeeper we have after Fabianski. Players I'd like to see gone before next season:

Almunia, Senderos, Hleb, Flamini, Aladiere, Baptista.

Otherwise, I thought the team played rather well defensively.

Flamini, Aladiere, Baptista will probably be gone along with Freddie. I can't see AW getting rid of Senderos - even though his lack of pace has exposed us on several occasions this season. As for transfer activity in the summer I don't see Eto, Huntelaar or Ribery being brought in as their price will be too high for AW. Babel may be a good option but hasn't he just signed a new deal with Ajax? Micah Richards will also be too expensive for us - wasn't he quoted at £18 million in the Jan window (even if it was Chelski interested). Henry and VP next season will bang the goals in and Bentner will be like having a new player.

CARLOS TEVEZ!!! As a winger/forward, this guy will help improve the this wingless team in so many areas.

At 3:57 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

AW needs to bu not only a winger but somene with grit and a little bit of bite....viera used to get sent off all the time...he was aggresive and we were so proud of him....now we have fabregas...dont get me wrong he is great....but he is not the same mold as viera...as a back u midfielder we have flamini ...he is no edu...u see AW has replaced older layers with youngsters who lack the same quality as these players who have left....AW and the board need o add around 100 milion on to the debt and build a ew squd using the back bone we already have....if AW was serious about winning the league he would get out there and attempt to buy ribery or maluda or babel as well as a midfielder like xavi or even barton....batista shoud go and honestly so shoud lehman...a new keeper and not a second rate polish guy but somene like buffon ...as wel as this a quick stricer like bojinov or n'zogbia...oth are good players...at above all someone who can defend down the right ....richards comes to mind and i mean micah not keiran...

If AW has determination then he has to show it to the fans by spending the dosh he gets on big named players....then perhaps the grove will have a soul and will be alive at every home match

"The sales of Ljungberg, Aliadiere, Flamini, Reyes and Almunia will raise £12 - £15m"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
What a stupid comment, first of all Almunia is not leaving, Wenger has already said that he is not for sale, secondly Reyes alone is worth £15 million, Flamini £7.5 - £8 million, Aliadiere £5 million and IF Ljunberg goes he's still worth at least £8 million

At 5:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

adding mone to the debt to rebuild th squad is the easiest way to improve the quality that we possess....although the debt of the stadium is already massive adding to it will ony keep us in debt for longer...we have the hitory to atract players of high class...the board always mention our finaial plan as being perfect...this is why we wont sell out...adding to the debt does not alter our finacial plan just extends the period of time it takes....for what it is worth i reckon is a fair deal....adding experienced class players to the squad will enable us to win trphies and actually prove to teams like chelsea and man u thatu dont need edless amounts of money....i think it is worth a gamble the idea should be exploited before it is too late

At 5:09 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

£15m for Reyes? £8m for Flamini and Ljungberg? £5m for Aliadiere? I think there is only one person making stupid comments!

This isn't Championship Manager mate!

So we will have Almunia, Poom, Fabianski and Lehmann as well as Mannone? Methinks not!
Ljungberg will raise £5m max, Reyes doesn't want to come back and so we can hardly hold people to ransom, which means if we can get £8-£10 we will rip people's arms off.

Flamini can buy out the remainder of his contract for about £2m as he has not signed on recently and Aliadiere can maybe raise £3m tops.

Therefore 5 + 8 + 2 + 3 = £18m which is pretty much best case scenario stuff and so I wouldn't say that it's too far off.

I happen to agree with the fact that we are likely to make tops 18 million on players sold...that is barely enough to buy a top class winger we so desperately need....on top of this it is easy to see that wenger wont sell that many players..he stated three can leave..flamini...aliadiere and reyes ...that makes three...therefore tops we are looking to make around 10 to 12 million again not enough...money is an issue in modern football as it is no longer a sport but a business...it is all well and good building for the future but lets be honest it is more important to win ...we need money so we can spend...whether or not wenger wants to spend the money.....it should be made availabe for him...therefore increasing the extent of the debt or seling the club to big stan the man is the only way to provide the money needed....if peter hill-wood and the board were really arsenal fans then would understand that money is everything in modern day football...or at least enough to buy one or two top players...perhaps they should hve listened to double d who ha the interest of the club in mind before the ousted him from the board...

i totally agree with the comment about reyes £15mil, ljunberg £8mil, and if flamini can buy out his contract then thats a shame coz e couldve been a great player 4 us. also boro offered £5mil in the december transfer window but we turned it down as we needed the players, if carricks worth ova £18million then the likes of reyes can bring in £15 million if we want 2 offload him quick coz e wnts 2 go. further more, adding to the comment about needin a class winger, WE ALREADY HAVE TWO, hleb is one of the most techniquely gifted players ive seen in my life, he comes back and the ball sticks to his feet, as soon as he gains confidence to shoot then he will score left right and centre, rosicky has had his 1st prem year and is lookin good an next season will be even better. henry and v.persie will be like 2 new signings. we do need 2 buy a stricker but when we get our squad back to full fitness then we will dominate also we have an very young team thats needs time, we have world class youngsters like fabregas and he isnt at the peek of his game yet!! money is not an issue in modern football wen u av sum1 like wenger as manager as he buys so many unknown players 4 so little money and ova the last ten years has completely transformed the club. stop goin on about we need this player and we need that player, we need to keep wenger at Arsenal 4 the rest of his life and we will be great and he will do things the propper way, build players up instead of doing a chealski and buy buy buy!!!

when i sed boro offered £5million in the december transfer window i meant for aliadierre

this is to Hazza. what a pathetic comment you made about needing someone that can defend down the right, Justin Hoyte is a class left back and Hleb always gets back, the only defensive thing we need to work on is set pieces. dont judge the pol, we havent seen him play yet and as wengers bought him hes got to have something about him, i agree that lehmann should go and baptistas already gone. quick stricker!!!!! henry!!! adebayor!!! van persie!!! bendtner!!! walcott!!! how much more pace do you want! and im not even going to get started on your barton comment, lets pretend you never said that because that was just plain stupid! as a back midfielder we have gilberto not flamini, also gilberto is no edu because hes better. and yeah fabregas is great, we have players like diaby comin through and your worried about needing a new vieira?!?! when he breaks into the team we will have him and fabregas, it will be like havin a young vieira with fabregas!!! and your making comments like that?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

We rarely buy big players, and even when we do spend that bit extra, it is not on a world -wide known player. Have faith in Wenger, if he needs to buy someone then he will know, he has done so much for the club, weve had two double seasons, one unbeaten, fa cups, champions league final and he made a reserve team that took the piss out of the scum at shite hart lane then again at the Emirates, he is our most successful manager so stop winging that we need to buy players, Wenger knows what he is doing and if you were all so good at telling him how to do his job then you would all be managers at top clubs but the fact of the matter is your not and he is the best manager we have ever had and is one of the best managers the world has ever known so stop whining and let him get on with doing his job and he will do the business again for Arsenal and we will yet again be winning trophies left right and centre with Wenger at the helm with the team he built from scratch, not some team he went out and bought.

to who ever responded to me....obviously u are apathetic excuse for an arsenal fan as u fail to realise that hleb firstly love to cut inside and lacks raw pace throughout the games...on top of this justin hoyte is a right back....micah richards is one of the best right backs around and we would be foolish not to capitalise or at leat make a bid...stuart pearce has been fired and therefore we have to at least attempt to sign him apart from the top three strikers of adebayor theiry and RvP we lack depth...would u really want bendtner playing seeing that he was OK at best for birmingham...dont get me wrong the boy is talented bt is he back up for an injury prone theiry...and before u argue that theiry is not injury prone look at this season ..i have taken into consideration depression and fatigue...Barton is a class player as he has proven this season ...yes he is violent and would rather use a team mates face than an ashtray but i still feel that he would do an amazing job in the centre for us...gilberto doesnt compare to edu cos they are different players....edu was a back up for viera an attacking force that is nt gilberto...diaby is grea but can be quiet at times...viera was like a racehorse that never stopped...he was an ispiration and that is wat made him an amazing captain...it is clear from your response that u are a complete dweeb who obviously has no idea about arsenal and the fact that the squad needs to be boosted with experience like malauda or ribery....

At 11:03 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

"yes he is violent and would rather use a team mates face than an ashtray but i still feel that he would do an amazing job in the centre for us"

So when he breaks TH14s leg in training you will be cool with that?

"injury prone theiry" and who is theiry? Oh... you mean Thierry as in Thierry Henry... the most famous Arsenal player of all time.. lambasting others and can't even spell Thierry's name right.

To quote you sir... "it is clear from your response that u are a complete dweeb who obviously has no idea about arsenal"

Hazza, first of all I would like to know what the last match was that you went to was as you calling me: "it is clear from your response that u are a complete dweeb who obviously has no idea about arsenal" was pathetic as I go to EVERY SINGLE MATCH, I've had a home season ticket since 1984 and an away season ticket since 1987. You obviously are one of the recently new Arsenal fans and unlike me have not supported them since they were quite frankly shit. Before Wenger came we were nobody so who are you to start questioning the man that has made us as great as what we are? Also as you say Diaby can be quite at times and as I've supported Arsenal for years (unlike you) I remember the great players who have had a bad start, when Tony Adams started his Arsenal career he was known as the donkey but he turned out to be one of the greatest Arsenal defenders and leaders of all time. Anbd yes THIERRY Henry has been injured for most of the season but that doesn't mean he will have the same trouble next year, Pires missed a whole season when he got injured infront of the Clock End but the next season he came back better than ever. And as you claim to be n Arsenal fan I cannot believe you said this: "hleb firstly love to cut inside and lacks raw pace throughout the games"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes he cuts inside but throughout the game he is everywhere, he cuts in on the left and right, he is like a 12th man, hes at the heart of every attack at he defends very well. Also I let you off the hook before when I said lets pretend you never said what you did about barton, if we did get barton then we would definately have injury problems as he would be the reason they have them from training!!!!! Bendtner OK at birmingham!!!!! He was class at birmingham, bruce praises him every week. Hazza it is clear you have no interest in football and just like to make pathetically stupid comments and you also made it clear your not a very good Arsenal fan as you can't even spell Thierry who is most probably the greatest player every to wear an Arsenal shirt (I know this has already been said but I cannot believe someone who CLAIMS to be an Arsenal fan would mispell Thierry)
